Florida residents may be assisted by durable power of attorney

At any point during a Florida resident's life, he or she could become incapacitated. Illnesses or serious injuries could lead to an individual being unable to make necessary life decisions on his or her own. If an illness or injury should occur, a properly prepared estate plan could come in handy. Having appointed a durable power of attorney to make decisions on an individual's behalf could make a considerable difference for an incapacitated individual.

Appointing a power of attorney allows a third party to make important decisions for an individual who may no longer be able to make those decisions him or herself. The power of attorney may handle financial aspects of a person's life and/or make medical decisions regarding the individual's health care. In some cases, an individual may give such responsibilities to one person, but appointing multiple parties may also be an option to consider.

Having made such appointments may be especially important to individuals who are single. Married parties often have a spouse that could make decisions when the need arises, but a single individual may not have someone immediately authorized to step in. Creating documents to appoint a responsible party may help avoid having to get a court-appointed guardian.

Appointing a durable power of attorney can be a prudent step for individuals of all ages to take. Finding out more information on what types of responsibilities the appointed party or parties will have could help Florida residents determine who they would like to appoint. Additionally, such information could assist in other aspects of the estate planning process as well.
