Estate planning involves multiple steps

Creating a plan for one's estate is critical for ensuring that one's wishes are upheld in the event of one's incapacitation or death in Florida. However, a person's estate planning task is only half complete once he or she has put together his or her plan. A few other steps are important to complete to have the ideal estate plan.

First, it is wise for people to communicate with their family members about the information in their estate plans. This includes giving any family member who has been appointed as one's health care agent a copy of one's health care power of attorney along with one's living will. It can also be helpful to review this information with the health care agent so that he or she has a general understanding of what one's wishes are.

In addition, for the adult child who has been designated one's power of attorney, it would be helpful to tell him or her where to access a list of one's investments and accounts in the event of one's incapacitation. One can also create a list of internet passwords for the individual so that he or she can access online accounts for the purpose of paying bills. If the power of attorney lacks this essential information, he or she will end up in an enigma that requires months to sort out.

It is additionally critical that a person in Florida keep his or her estate plan current. Although estate planning can seem overwhelming, the lack of an estate plan can lead to even more stress for family members if one ends up being incapacitated or passing away. Appropriate legal guidance may help individuals to create plans that will ultimately meet their needs as well as communicate their plans so as to reduce confusion among their loved ones.
